My parakeet just doesn't like me, what do i do?

I got this parakeet exactly a week ago, he/she is a beautiful white with some blue and gray around his/her neck, i really want to love this bird but im finding it a hard thing to do. i give the bird its space a lot of the day and when i go to pick it up from its favorite perch in the house it tries to run away. i was told to just pick it up to show it that it cant boss you around. Then she jumps off of my finger and back to the perch. My bird just does not want to be with me at all, i want to hold it and pet it but it wont cooperate. there have been a few times when i can pet him/her and she is hesitant but lets me, then there ar other times when she lunges at me or bites me and squaks extremely loud when i get gto close or try to pick her up. if i get my finger close to her she will get on it, but usually jumps off if given the chance. please help, i want this bird to be my new best friend
